KEYS TO SUCCESS
You and your child are about to embark on a wonderful adventure discovering the joys of learning a musical instrument. The learning process may be different for each student; however, there are some common factors that will hold true for each student:
1. Lots of positive reinforcement. At the beginning, you will hear sounds that might be less than beautiful. IT WILL GET BETTER!!! With the right amount of encouragement (and practice time), you will be amazed at the progress you child can make in a relatively short period of time. Practice is the key.
2. Practice is the key! Not only is it important that your child get into a regular routine of 20 minutes each session/5times per week (Total: 100 minutes/week) but students also need to know HOW to practice. The strategy we will use in the lessons each week has proven to be very successful. Each student is strongly encouraged to use the same method at home. The process is as follows
A. Say the rhythms (students know how this is done
because they also perform rhythms in this manner during their
general music class with Mrs. Stewart.
B.Say the note names while fingering each note on the instrument.
Try to use the correct rhythms (nice, steady beat) at the same time.
C. NOW you can play the song. Practicing in this manner will help
reinforce each of the various components of the music separately.
Then, it will be much easier to play the song accurately.
3.Sit down and listen while your child is practicing. Having an audience is great motivation for a few more practice minutes.
