SCHEDULES
Instrument Lessons
Lessons are given once a week during the school day. The day of the week for the lesson will not change; however, the time of the lesson will rotate throughout the day. This prevents the student from missing the same class each week. Each band student is responsible for knowing the time of his/her lesson, keeping track of time and coming to the music room for the lesson. Classroom teachers will post a copy of the student’s lesson schedule in the classroom (see enclosed sample lesson schedule – classroom teachers and students each receive a copy.). The student is expected to come at their lesson time unless that time conflicts with one of the following: Speech, AIS services, a test given by the classroom teacher or swimming. If the lesson time conflicts with any of the above, the student is expected to come down to my office BEFORE school begins to reschedule the lesson for a different time that day. Instrument lessons will begin on or around September 26th.
BAND REHEARSALS
Fourth Grade Band will rehearse from 10:25-11:05. on B, D & F days and Chorus will rehearse from 10:25 to 11:05 on A or C and E days. We anticipate that band will begin on October 25th and Chorus on October 26th.
REHEARSAL BEHAVIOR
As you may well imagine with 75+ children in the band room at one time, behavioral ‘rules and regs’ are extremely important (and strongly enforced). Band rehearsals run on the principle of respect, cooperation, and self-control. Every effort is made to cultivate these self-monitoring skills in each child. First the student is given a verbal warning for any behavior that negatively affects the ability of the group to rehearse. If the student lacks the control needed to improve this behavior, he/she is removed from the rehearsal and asked to reflect using a BEHAVIOR CONTRACT. This contract must be signed by the student, parent and teacher before the student is invited back into rehearsal. This has proven to be a valuable tool for students.
PRACTICE CLUB
Practice Club will be held on Mondays before school (first bus run) and will begin shortly after band rehearsals start. You will be receiving notification when Practice Club begins. Once your child has signed up, then they will be issued a permanent bus pass for Monday. This is a voluntary practice session and may be counted as 30 minutes toward the homework record.
